A tragic roof collapse occurred at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on April 8, 2025, resulting in at least 124 fatalities and over 250 injuries. The incident took place during a concert by renowned merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who was among the deceased.
Among the victims were former Major League Baseball players Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera. Dotel, aged 51, had an extensive 15-year MLB career, playing for 13 teams, including the Atlanta Braves. Blanco was also a notable figure in professional baseball.
Additionally, Nelsy Cruz, the governor of Monte Cristi province and sister of MLB All-Star Nelson Cruz, was among those who lost their lives.
Rescue operations are ongoing, with international teams from Puerto Rico and Israel assisting local crews. Authorities estimate that the search for survivors may continue for another 24 to 36 hours.
The cause of the roof collapse is currently under investigation. The Jet Set nightclub, an iconic venue operating since 1973, had undergone renovations in 2010 and 2015.
President Luis Abinader has declared three days of national mourning in response to this devastating event.
