They eventually paid Crystal Palace £50million for Wan-Bissaka – underlining Solskjaer’s faith in the 22-year-old.
The Norwegian said: “You saw an exceptional defender when I watched him last season. He had a couple of games against Sane with Man City, and you think, ‘Wow he is so hard to go past.’

“I have said it many times now, that being a Newcastle lad and having the season he’s just had, it’s now his way forward.
“Of course, we all would love him to stay, but as young as he is, the players now, it’s their prerogative. If they want to run down their contracts, then there’s nothing much more we can do as a club.
“We’ve done everything we possibly can, the rest is now up to Matty and for him to decide.
