Characterized by the loss of previously acquired skills, or a late onset of developmental delay. The child shows normal development and learns age appropriate skills till around two years, and later shows an inability in new learning, and reversals of existing skills
- Delay or loss of expressive language skills
- Impairment in nonverbal communication such as facial expression and body language
- Lack of social and self help skills
- Inability to play with peers, start conversation, or respond appropriately
- Regression in bowel and bladder control
- Deterioration in motor skills
Causes
– The exact cause is unknown. It is associated with certain disorders like:
- Schilder’s disease a central nervous system disorder
- Excess fats storage diseases
- Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis
- Tuberous sclerosis
- Leukodystrophy
– The risk factors include:
- Viral exposure usually intrauterine transmission
- Birth trauma
- Exposure to toxins
- Premature birth
- Family history of autism
