Brooklyn Beckham has been criticised after his fiancée, Nicola Peltz, shared a photograph on Instagram of him holding her throat.
Earlier this month, Peltz shared the photo alongside the caption: “tb to prom night”.
However, Diana Nammi, founder of the KWRO Women’s Rights Organisation, which campaigns against domestic violence, has said that Peltz should consider deleting the post altogether, labelling it “dangerous”.
Speaking to The Independent, Ms Nammi said: “Sharing this image contributes to normalising this type of physical behaviour which can empower abusers and discourage victims in speaking up.
“On average, one woman in the UK is strangled to death by her partner every two weeks.”
“The hurdles victims face when leaving an abusive relationship are already immense. As a society we must do everything we can to drive key messages around domestic violence, and social media should be used responsibly for this too.”
Ms Nammi added that she is concerned that an abuser viewing the photo “can feel this type of behaviour is acceptable, which can put victims at risk for and accepting of abusive behaviours”.
She added: “I call on Brooklyn Beckham to publicly acknowledge the error to glamorise this type of behaviour and communicate to his millions of followers that domestic violence must never be taken lightly, it is serious and many women are murdered by strangulation.”
Ms Nammi’s comments come after some of the couple’s fans also raised issues with the image.
“Why he choking though [sic],” commented one person on the image.
However, many expressed their support for the newly engaged couple.
“Both of you are cute,” wrote one person.
“You two make such a beautiful couple!” another added.
The Independent has contacted representatives for Beckham and Peltz for comment.
