In a significant political shift that could alter the balance of power ahead of the 2027 general elections, several high-ranking members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), including sitting governors and senators, are reportedly in advanced talks to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Multiple sources within both parties have confirmed ongoing negotiations, with insiders suggesting that at least three PDP governors and over a dozen federal lawmakers are weighing their options amid rising internal discontent within the opposition party.

The development comes as the APC continues to consolidate its dominance across the country, leveraging recent electoral victories and a perceived loss of cohesion within the PDP. Analysts say the wave of possible defections could further weaken the opposition’s ability to present a united front against the ruling party.

One PDP senator, who spoke on condition of anonymity, cited “a lack of strategic direction and poor internal democracy” as key reasons for reconsidering his political future. “There is growing frustration among members who feel sidelined in the party’s decision-making process,” he said.

In response, APC leadership has welcomed the prospects of new entrants, touting it as a sign of confidence in the party’s vision and governance record. “We remain a big tent for all progressive-minded Nigerians. Anyone who believes in our agenda for development and unity is welcome,” said a senior APC official.

While official confirmations remain pending, the potential defections are already generating ripples in political circles, prompting urgent closed-door meetings among PDP stakeholders who are seeking to prevent an exodus that could decimate the party’s influence nationwide.

Political observers say the coming weeks will be critical in determining the shape of Nigeria’s political landscape, as both parties brace for realignments that may define the next electoral cycle.
