A 50-year-old father was sentenced to 40 years imprisonment for raping his eight-year-old daughter and his 15-year-old neighbour in Brandvlei.
Northern Cape police spokesperson Captain Sergio Kock said the accused was sentenced in the Calvinia Regional Court on July 28.
Kock said that the man’s neighbour had laid a charge of rape against him on November 11, 2013 in Brandvlei for the rape of her 15-year-old daughter.
“He was arrested and bail was successfully opposed. The complainant later moved out of Brandvlei and could not be found, hence the case was withdrawn by the senior State prosecutor.”
Kock added that the man’s wife and mother of their eight-year-old daughter laid a charge against him on June 19, 2021 for repeatedly raping the girl.
“The accused was arrested and the first complainant was traced in Upington whereupon the case was placed back on the court roll.”
Kock said that the accused was sentenced to 40 years imprisonment each (120 years) on three charges of raping his daughter.
“He was also found guilty of the rape of his 15-year-old neighbour and sentenced to another 20 years. The sentences will run concurrently and he will serve an effective 40 years in prison.”
The acting deputy provincial commissioner for Crime Detection, Brigadier Nicky Mills, welcomed the multiple sentences.
He also commended Detective Sergeant Jaco Swartz and Detective Constable Jacques Nielsen from the Calvinia SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit for their “meticulous investigations” that led to the incarceration of the perpetrator.
“Crimes committed against women and children are a priority for the police in the Province,” said Mills.
