In the workplace, there is an adage that says, “people don’t leave jobs; they leave managers.”

The sentiment rings in the minds of workers who have encountered difficult bosses.

Research published by the International Journal of Scientific Research and Management revealed that Kenya’s employee turnover rate is over 50%.

The study, which investigated the employee turnover rate among star-rated hotels in Nairobi county, showed that the city’s hotels recorded the highest turnover rate at 72%.

“Findings showed that 75.7% changes in employee turnover rate are attributed to organisational culture orientations,” it stated.

How do you deal with a difficult boss?

Chinwendu Ofoegbu, a human resource partner at UBA Group, shared strategies to survive and thrive when facing a challenging manager.

1. Understand the root cause

The HR expert said the first step is to identify the root cause of why the manager is behaving that way.

This would provide insights on how to respond and adapt.

“Try to understand the underlying reasons for their behaviour. Is it a matter of their personal management style, unrealistic expectations, or external pressures affecting their behaviour?

This understanding can provide you with valuable insights into how to adapt and respond effectively,” she advised.

2. Clear and open communication

When dealing with a challenging boss, communicate clearly and openly through constructive dialogue.

Among the strategies to deploy here are scheduling regular meetings to discuss workflow and raising any concerns you have.

When presenting your arguments, be respectful but assertive. Seek clarifications to avoid any misunderstandings.

3. Be flexible

Be ready to adapt your working style by being flexible to align with the manager’s expectations.

In this case, find a common ground to improve the working relationship.

However, do not sacrifice your values and standards, but be more productive.

4. Document everything

Documentation will provide sufficient evidence of performance and protect you in case any disputes arise.

Keep records of projects and any communication with your boss.

“Documents provide a sense of security when dealing with an unpredictable manager,” Chinwendu said.

5. Seek support

Another way to deal with a demanding boss is to sell support from colleagues, mentors or HR.

They will offer valuable advice and share their experiences navigating a challenging work environment.

6. Manage emotions

It can be emotionally draining working in a toxic environment. Maintain composure by practising stress management techniques, including taking deep breaths.

An employee’s emotional well-being is crucial for long-term success.

7. Set boundaries and seek opportunities for growth

Set boundaries between your work and personal life. Chinwendu noted that a problematic boss should not consume your thoughts outside work.

A healthy life-work balance means you will have harmony and time to do other things outside the workplace.

A challenging situation can be an opportunity for professional growth if you develop resilience.

“By understanding the root causes of their behaviour, fostering open communication, and adapting your approach, you can not only survive but also thrive in such circumstances,” the HR expert concluded.
