Having accepted that Mbappe would not commit his long-term future to the club, PSG offered the forward a new two-year deal with an enormous wage that was significantly higher than the salary proposed by suitors Real Madrid, who are looking to sign Mbappe on a free transfer this summer.
As noted by Marca, Mbappe gave serious consideration to the offer and was humbled by PSG’s determination to commit to him, but the 23-year-old eventually decided to turn the proposal down.
Mbappe, as has been stressed previously, is not particularly bothered about money and is more concerned about the project on offer by his club, where he wants to be the undisputed focal point.
PSG have tried to convince Mbappe that he can take that role at the Parc des Princes but he has not taken the bait and has actually grown concerned over just how politically motivated talks around his future have become.
French president Emmanuel Macron has involved himself in the situation, while PSG’s owners, a subsidiary of the Qatari sovereign wealth fund, have geared a lot of their pleas around the upcoming 2022 World Cup in their homeland.
Mbappe just wants to focus on his football and is thinking solely about what is on offer to him on the pitch, and as it stands, his preference is still to walk away from Paris.
