Actress Lizzy Anjorin and gospel singer Tope Alabi appear to be at odds following an incident where the singer declined to perform at a surprise birthday celebration organized for Lizzy.
The actress recently celebrated her birthday, and in a show of love, her fan club, in collaboration with her husband, arranged a surprise performance by Tope Alabi — an artiste Lizzy reportedly admires greatly.
Tope Alabi and her husband, Soji Alabi, arrived at Lizzy’s fashion store in Lagos but chose not to perform once they realized the nature of the event. Following the incident, social media buzzed with various speculations about the reasons behind the singer’s decision.
In response, Lizzy Anjorin took to Instagram to address the situation. She refrained from blaming the Alabis directly but expressed disappointment over her fans spending money on a surprise rather than supporting her business.
“I don’t celebrate birthdays. Only someone who doesn’t know me would think otherwise. I can’t judge their decision, but if I had invited them myself, I wouldn’t have paid them,” she stated.
In a subsequent video, Lizzy criticized Tope Alabi, suggesting that the singer shouldn’t act as though she is more righteous than others. She questioned Tope’s societal contributions despite her long-standing career in gospel music.
“Aunty Tope, you can’t claim to be more righteous than I am. If we are to compare societal impact, I have done more. I have empowered and supported more people. Those who benefit from you are often within your circle, not necessarily the larger society. I’ve added real value. If I were to list my contributions, it would take over a year. I have lived a life of purpose. I am not perfect, but I thank God that only He can judge me.”
