A young man identified as Utibe Eteffia, said to be in his early 30s, has reportedly taken his own life after falling victim to an online scam that left him financially and emotionally devastated.

According to reports , Utibe, who ran a Point-of-Sale (PoS) business, died by ingesting a lethal substance after he was allegedly defrauded of N2.5 million by suspected internet fraudsters, commonly known as “Yahoo Boys.”

Before the tragic incident, the deceased had been exhibiting signs of distress. He reportedly shared concerning posts on social media, including an image of a lit candle resembling an obituary and a cryptic message:
“Do you believe in reincarnation?”
He also urged his followers to show love and compassion, writing, “Be your brother’s keeper. Help those in need.”

Signs of Decline

Neighbours observed that Utibe had become increasingly withdrawn in the days leading to his death. Some reported that he often cried alone and made late-night phone calls. One neighbour recalled Utibe visiting to ask for rat poison, which he claimed was to clear rodents in his home.

“He later went to a nearby chemist and managed to buy a poisonous substance before travelling to his village, where he ended his life,” the neighbour added.

Background and Circumstances

Utibe, an indigene of Ini Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, had faced numerous life challenges. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by an aunt who supported him through secondary school. With help from relatives and friends, he started his PoS business.

In a desperate bid to find stability, Utibe reportedly got involved with a group linked to cybercrime and was allegedly introduced into a cult-like network known as “Yahoo Plus.” According to family sources, he was duped shortly after his initiation, which reportedly led to mental and emotional disorientation.

“He began acting strange, often talking about life beyond the present world,” a source said.

Final Hours

Upon arriving in his hometown, Utibe asked family members about attending church. Later that day, he asked an uncle for financial help and was given N10,000, to which he responded, “How much can N10,000 do?”

After attending church that evening, he waited for the household to retire before consuming the substance that took his life. His lifeless body was discovered the next morning on the veranda, shocking relatives and prompting further investigation.

“We won’t bury him until we understand what led him to this decision,” a family source stated.
