The ill-fated flight, a Cessna 206, had been en route from Araracuara in Amazonas province to San Jose del Guaviare in Guaviare province when it issued a distress signal in the early hours of May 1.

Engine failure was cited as the cause of the emergency. Tragically, three adults, including the children’s mother, Magdalena Mucutuy, and the pilot, lost their lives in the crash.

Their bodies were discovered within the wreckage of the plane. Miraculously, the four siblings, aged 13, 9, 4, and a 12-month-old baby, survived the impact.

Narcizo Mucutuy, the children’s grandfather, expressed his overwhelming joy upon learning of their rescue.

Addressing reporters, he shared,

“As the grandfather to my grandchildren who disappeared in the jungles of the Yari, at this moment I am very happy.”

Photos released by the Colombian military depicted a group of soldiers standing amidst the jungle, with the four children safely in their care.

President Petro conveyed his elation through a Twitter message, exclaiming, “A joy for the whole country! The four children who were lost… in the Colombian jungle appeared alive.”

Initially, Petro had prematurely announced the discovery of the children on May 17 but later retracted the statement, acknowledging that the information was unconfirmed.

However, on Friday, he confirmed the rescue, emphasizing the children’s strength and resilience in surviving alone in the heart of the jungle.

Petro shared that the children were weak and needed medical evaluation.

During the rescue efforts, search teams, aided by tracking dogs, had come across discarded fruit that the children had relied on for sustenance, as well as makeshift shelters crafted from jungle vegetation.

The operation involved the coordinated efforts of Colombia’s army and air force, utilising aeroplanes and helicopters to locate and extract the children from their ordeal.

The nation rejoices at the safe recovery of these four young survivors, applauding their courage and tenacity in enduring such a challenging and isolating experience.

The tale of their survival amidst adversity serves as a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the dedication of those who risked their lives to bring them back home.
