At their recent meeting in Ibadan, Oyo State, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum addressed several key issues affecting the nation and the party’s strategic direction.

Rejection of Merger Talks

The forum unequivocally dismissed ongoing speculations about merging with other political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. Bala Mohammed, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, stated, “The Forum has resolved that the PDP will not join any coalition or merger.” He emphasized that while the PDP remains open to individuals and groups aiming to promote good governance, it will not engage in any merger discussions.

Concerns Over National Security

The governors expressed deep alarm over the deteriorating security situation in Nigeria, particularly in Borno, Katsina, and Edo States. They called for a comprehensive review of the national security strategy, advocating for greater empowerment of state governments to establish effective defense mechanisms.

Party Organizational Matters

Addressing internal party affairs, the forum reiterated its support for the Court of Appeal’s decision recognizing Hon. S.K.E Udeh-Okoye as the authentic National Secretary of the PDP. They urged the National Working Committee (NWC) to implement this judgment promptly. Additionally, the forum recommended rescheduling the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting to March 13, 2025, and proposed holding the party’s convention from August 28 to 30, 2025, in Kano.

Solidarity with Rivers State Governor

Expressing solidarity, the governors backed Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara in light of the challenges faced due to the declaration of a state of emergency in the state. They pledged continued support until the situation is resolved.

Attendance and Acknowledgments

The meeting was attended by several governors, including Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Peter Mbah (Enugu), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom), and Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta). The forum expressed gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde and the people of Oyo State for their warm hospitality during the meeting.
