Wike  says he is to Reconciliation with Suspended Rivers Governor Fubara—But With Conditions

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has expressed willingness to reconcile with the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara—on the condition that Fubara offers a sincere apology for his role in the ongoing political crisis in the state.

Wike and Fubara have been at loggerheads since Fubara assumed office in 2023, resulting in a widening political divide that eventually split the Rivers State House of Assembly into two opposing factions.

As tensions escalated and security in the state deteriorated, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency. In response, the president suspended Governor Fubara for six months and appointed a sole administrator to temporarily oversee the state’s governance.

During a media parley held in Abuja on Friday, April 18, Wike questioned the authenticity of peace efforts and stressed the importance of honest, constructive dialogue.

“Has anybody approached anybody? I don’t like people who are hypocrites,” Wike said. “I asked her [referring to an unnamed individual] to name one elder in Rivers State who has genuinely tried to broker peace.”

He continued, “In the end, if we achieve nothing, we’ll be back to square one—and that makes no sense. The day Mr. President intervened, the Assembly members immediately withdrew the impeachment notice. I’m open to forgiveness—if he comes sincerely.”
