Spanish authorities have arrested a woman accused of selling her newborn baby to another family for €2,000 in an incident that has shocked the nation and raised concerns about child trafficking.
According to police reports, the woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, allegedly arranged the illegal transaction shortly after giving birth. The sale reportedly took place in a discreet handover, with the receiving family paying the sum in cash.
The investigation began after hospital staff raised suspicions about inconsistencies in the woman’s account regarding the baby’s whereabouts. Subsequent inquiries led law enforcement to the couple who had taken custody of the child. Both the biological mother and the couple involved in the transaction have been taken into custody.
Authorities say the baby is now in the care of social services while legal proceedings are underway. The suspects may face charges related to human trafficking, illegal adoption, and endangering the welfare of a minor.
Spain’s Ministry of Social Rights has condemned the act, calling it a “deep violation of children’s rights” and vowed to tighten safeguards to prevent similar cases in the future.
The case remains under investigation as officials work to determine if there are links to a broader trafficking network.
