Farewell to Sim cards
The launch of the new iPhones also brought with it a totally unexpected change for the U.S. market, namely the removal of the dedicated physical SIM slot from the Cupertino company’s new smartphones.
No more physical SIM card
A trend that is bound to affect all smartphone manufacturers and has been triggered by Apple. In fact, the new iPhone 14 will not have a physical Sim slot, at least in the U.S. market.
The 8.3 billion SIM cards will disappear.
Confirming the trend is the Ericsson Mobility Report, which tells us that the 8.3 billion Sims in circulation will disappear in the next few years. These figures represent only the Sims currently destined for smartphones; if we counted those embedded in devices in other categories as well, including tablets, cars, portable routers and more – the number would be even higher.
What are the advantages of eSIM
Certainly saying goodbye to physical brings, in some ways, more advantages in terms of number portability. The whole sphere related to security should also be taken into consideration.
Many more eSims in circulation
With iPhones leading the way (already iPhone is Dual Sim with a first physical Sim and second eSim), the second giant to embrace virtual at the expense of physical is Samsung. According to the think thank Research report, The total value of the eSim segment could reach $17.5 billion by 2030, up from $7.3 billion last year.
