Presidency Distances Itself from 2027 Campaign Billboards, Urges Supporters to Stop
On Sunday, the Presidency made it clear that it has nothing to do with the billboards and other promotional materials popping up around the country that appear to be launching a 2027 re-election campaign for President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.
In a statement signed by Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency urged those responsible for funding and putting up these campaign materials to stop immediately.
“We’re calling on all individuals and groups behind these premature 2027 campaign billboards to halt their activities without delay,” the statement said.
Onanuga expressed concern about the growing number of billboards in various cities, particularly in Abuja and Kano. Some even feature images of the President alongside his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
He emphasized that Nigeria’s electoral laws clearly prohibit political campaigning before the official timetable is released. “Even though President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima appreciate the loyalty and support of Nigerians, they do not back any campaign that violates the law,” he added.
The Presidency stressed that early campaigning can compromise the fairness of elections and give certain candidates an unfair edge. “As leaders who respect the rule of law, Tinubu and Shettima do not support actions that could undermine Nigeria’s democratic institutions or the electoral process,” Onanuga said.
He further clarified that until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) releases the official timeline for the 2027 elections, no one has been authorized to start any kind of campaign on behalf of the President—whether through billboards, media, or other platforms.
The statement closed by reiterating that the focus of the President and Vice President remains on delivering on their promises—reviving the economy, improving infrastructure, boosting human capital, investing in social development, and strengthening national security.
“When the time is right and INEC gives the green light, President Tinubu will address Nigerians directly about his intentions,” Onanuga concluded.
