A truck loaded with scrapped irons has killed a Traffic Warden in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

THE PARADISE NEWS gathered that the incident happened on Wednesday evening, December 22, 2021, at WAPI Junction when the truck driver lost control and rammed into the officer.

According to eyewitnesses, the Traffic Warden, a Sargeant officer of the Nigerian Police was controlling traffic at the ever-busy WAPI Junction after Mobil by MCC at about 5pm when the truck crushed her death, bringing out her intestine.

One of the eyewitnesses who gave his name a Williams said the truck, with registration number NEPZA CR 576 FTZ was trying to avoid a Nissan Primera Saloon car with registration number EDO ABD 721 HZ before it ran over the Police officer.

“The truck was coming from Watt Market side and was fully loaded with scrapped metals. The Nissan Saloon car had overtaken the truck and was negotiating towards Anansa MCC, causing the truck driver to lose control and run over the Yellow Fever (Traffic Warden) woman.

“They were two officers controlling the traffic, one escaped while the other (victim) was unfortunate as she was hit by the truck.

“The victim’s intestines burst out and she died on the spot. Her body was quickly taken to the mortuary and the truck driver was apprehended – even though some persons wanted to mob him and inflate his tyres as well”, Williams said.

Another eyewitness who spoke under anonymity blamed the Government for not fixing the traffic lights in Calabar, thereby risking the lives of traffic officers.

DSP Irene Ugbo, Police Public Relations Officer in the state confirmed the incident to newsmen.
