US President-elect, Donald Trump said Wednesday that he has received assurances from Mexico’s new president that she will “stop migration” though her country and into the US.
Trump announced earlier this week that he planned to slap a 25% tariff on Mexican imports to get the country to crack down on illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
Canada and China would also be hit with 25% and 10% tariffs, respectively, as part of the executive order, Trump said.
“Just had a wonderful conversation with the new President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
“She has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border,” he added.
Trump, 78, noted that he and Sheinbaum Pardo also discussed illegal drugs coming into the US from south of the border during their “very productive conversation.”
“We also talked about what can be done to stop the massive drug inflow into the United States, and also, U.S. consumption of these drugs,” he wrote.
“It was a very productive conversation!”
Sheinbaum Pardo, a 62-year-old scientist and former mayor of Mexico City, became Mexico’s first female president when she was inaugurated in October.
In a social media post, she confirmed that she informed Trump that migrant caravans racing to the US border “are being taken care of.”
“I had an excellent conversation with President Donald Trump,” Sheinbaum Pardo wrote on X.
“We discussed Mexico’s strategy on the migration phenomenon and I shared that caravans are not arriving at the northern border because they are being taken care of in Mexico.
“We also discussed strengthening collaboration on security issues within the framework of our sovereignty and the campaign we are carrying out in the country to prevent the consumption of fentanyl,” she added.
In another Truth Social post, Trump indicated that Sheinbaum’s promise to stop migrants from entering the US would be “effective immediately.”
“Mexico will stop people from going to our Southern Border, effective immediately,” the 45th president said.
“THIS WILL GO A LONG WAY TOWARD STOPPING THE ILLEGAL INVASION OF THE USA. Thank you!!!”
Trump has vowed to enact the largest deportation in history, starting when he takes the oath of office Jan. 20.
Earlier this month, the president-elect confirmed that he would declare a “national emergency” to deport illegal migrants with the help of “military assets” once he steps back into office.
