Uganda – A terrible road accident has claimed the innocent lives of travellers, including a renowned businessman.
Accident along Mbarara-Kabale highway
The car crash happened along the Mbarara-Kabale highway in Ntungamo District, Uganda, on Thursday, July 7.
Entrepreneur Apollo Nyegamahe popularly known as Aponye died on the spot on that fateful night at Itojo.
Body of businessman taken to Itojo hospital
According to reports by Monitor, the businessman’s SUV car, a black Toyota Land Cruiser, rammed into a stationary lorry, killing him instantly.
The report added that the driver and other occupants were rushed to the hospital, around 200 metres from the scene, where Nyegamehe’s body was taken too.
When the accident happened, the billionaire was on his way to attend a burial ceremony at his home village in Kigo, Rukiga District.
Supplying flour, beans to Ugandans
The Ugandan became popular during COVID-19 when he helped the government of Uganda supply beans and flour to vulnerable Ugandans affected by the measures set out by President Yoweri Museveni to curb the spread of the virus.
The wealthy man left behind a string of businesses and enterprises under his name, some of which operated beyond Uganda.
Mombasa Road claims life of Kamba businessman
Closer home, Ithea Wamatwins, a popular Kamba businessman, died in a car accident along Mombasa Road.
According to a police report shared by politician Lenny Musyoka, the Toyota Hilux the singer was travelling in ran into a head-on collision while overtaking.
“The double cabin, which Rodgers Muia, aged 30 years, was driving, was heading to Mombasa from Nairobi, and he overtook carelessly,” reads the police report.
The incident filed vide OB 20/22/01/2023 indicated that the Hilux rammed into a Mahindra Scorpion driven by a 40-year-old man.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Kambu Sub-county Hospital mortuary to await autopsy while the injured are receiving treatment at Makindu Level IV Hospital.
