Nairobi – The United States Embassy in Kenya has announced a temporary closure and suspension of services.

This would be in honour of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a holiday observed annually in the United States to celebrate the legacy of the civil rights leader.

In a statement shared on social media platform X on Friday, January 17, the embassy issued the fresh update on its operations.

“The embassy will be closed on Monday, January 20, 2025, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day,” read the statement in part.

This annual holiday celebrates King’s tireless advocacy for racial equality, justice, and non-violent activism.

King’s non-confrontational methods led to monumental changes in the United States and inspired movements for human rights worldwide.

When will US Embassy services resume

The embassy reassured Kenyans that all consular and other embassy operations would resume as normal on Tuesday, January 21, 2025.

The closure applies to all in-person visits, including visa and passport services.

This year’s celebration coincides with US President-elect Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony in Washington DC.
