WHO issues new warning over ‘mystery virus’ and calls for return of COVID restrictions

The World Health Organization (WHO) has called for the reinstatement of restrictions implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic as cases of human metapneumovirus (HMPV) continue to surge.

While hospitals in China are overwhelmed with positive cases of this respiratory illness, the number of infections is also rising in the UK, leaving other nations uncertain about how to handle the situation.

The Geneva-based organization is now urging the reintroduction of three key measures to protect populations: mask-wearing, isolation, and handwashing.

A spokesman said: “WHO recommends that individuals in areas where it is winter take normal precautions to prevent the spread and reduce risks posed by respiratory pathogens, especially to the most vulnerable.”

“Individuals should also consider wearing a mask in crowded or poorly ventilated spaces, cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or bent elbow, practice regular hand washing, and get recommended vaccines as per physician and local public health authorities advice,” they added
