Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has firmly rejected the call for reconciliation from former militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, known as Tompolo. Wike made it clear that peace between him and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara can only be achieved if Fubara admits to any wrongdoing and directly seeks forgiveness.

In a statement released by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, Wike emphasized that forgiveness can only occur when the person at fault acknowledges their actions. According to Wike, Fubara has not yet taken that step, and without a formal request for pardon, any attempt at reconciliation is futile.

Tompolo had earlier urged Wike to set aside his anger and reconcile with Fubara for the sake of peace in Rivers State. He suggested that Wike should “bring his temper down” and engage in talks to resolve the issues, allowing Fubara to return to his role as governor.

Wike’s camp, however, responded skeptically to Tompolo’s plea. Olayinka, Wike’s spokesperson, pointed out that reconciliation is only possible if the wrongdoer first acknowledges their fault. He asked, “As Christians, do you forgive someone who hasn’t come to ask for forgiveness?” He added that true reconciliation can only happen when the person who has wronged you takes responsibility for their actions.

Olayinka also made it clear that Wike’s concerns are based on principles of good governance, not personal feelings. Wike has repeatedly stated that his issue with Fubara is not a personal one, but rather revolves around the governor’s approach to leadership. He has urged Fubara to govern in line with the rule of law and respect those who helped him get to power. “Don’t discard those who supported you,” Wike has said.

To conclude, Olayinka shared a proverb to highlight their position: “It’s like asking a doctor to prescribe medicine to a sick person, but not convincing the patient to take it. What’s the result?”
